Silicone is water-resistant and withstands movement, but it cannot be painted. Polyurethane bonds strongly and can be painted, but requires protection from the sun. Acrylic is the easiest of all to work with and can be applied with a brush, but it cannot withstand water or significant movement. Below you will see where each is best suited, how to distinguish between acid-curing and neutral-curing silicone, and how to prepare the joint so that the work will last for years.

The three materials at a glance

Characteristic

Silicone

Polyurethane

Acrylic

It is being painted

No

Yes

Yes

Water resistance

Very high

High

Limited

Joint movement

Long

Long

Short

Adhesion to porous surfaces

Only the neutral one

Very good

Good

Exposure to the sun

It holds up

It needs to be covered

It needs a coat of paint

A typical job

Bathroom, kitchen, windows

Construction joints, floors

Cracks, frames, ceilings

Silicone: first, distinguish between acetic and neutral

This is where most mistakes are made, because the two types look similar on the shelf. Silicone acetate cures by releasing acetic acid, which is why it gives off a strong vinegar smell as it dries. It adheres very well to smooth, non-porous surfaces: glass, tiles, stainless steel and enamel. It is the classic choice for bathtubs, sinks and glass panes.

Neutral silicone does not release acid and has a much milder odour. It also adheres to porous materials, such as concrete, wood, marble, brick, ceramics, PVC and polyester. It is the right choice where acid-based sealant would cause problems: on marble and natural stone, on mirrors, and on metals that may corrode.

Whichever type you choose, silicone cannot be painted. Paint will not adhere to it and will either bubble or flake off. If the joint is to be painted, choose a different material from the outset.

Polyurethane: when a joint needs strength

Polyurethane combines sealing properties with strong adhesion. It withstands significant movement, can be walked on, is abrasion-resistant and can be painted, making it the ideal material for structural joints, expansion joints in floors and for outdoor structures subject to heavy use. Its weak point is ultraviolet radiation: if exposed to the sun for years, it will yellow and lose its elasticity, which is why it is usually covered with paint or a joint cover.

Polyurethane also requires greater care during application. On porous substrates, it often requires a primer, whilst its curing times are longer than those of silicone, so the joint must not be subjected to stress from the very first day.

In the Geosantro range, this application is covered by MS polymer-based products and adhesive sealants, which offer comparable strength and can be painted, without being as sensitive to sunlight. They also have a practical advantage: they bond to slightly damp surfaces, which is a real plus on a building site. If you have a specific specification that explicitly calls for polyurethane, please let us know exactly what the project requires.

Acrylic: for interior projects that are to be painted

Acrylic is water-based, easy to apply and can be cleaned off with water whilst it is still wet. It can be painted over without any problems, which is why it is the ideal material for cracks in plaster and plasterboard, for filling gaps around door and window frames, and for ceiling joints.

It has two limitations. It cannot withstand constant damp, so it should not be placed in a shower cubicle or near a sink. And it cannot withstand significant movement, so it will crack in a joint that is constantly in motion. There are special versions for outdoor use, but even these need to be painted over.

Four questions to ask before you choose

Instead of memorising tables, answer the following in order:

Will the joint be painted? If so, the silicone will be removed straight away.

Will it be constantly wet? If so, go for silicone.

How much does the joint move? The greater the movement, the more flexible the material needs to be.

What material is the surface made of? On porous substrates, you should use a neutral silicone or acrylic sealant, not an acid-based one.

A joint requires preparation

The material is rarely to blame, contrary to what we might think. Most faults originate at the joint. The surface must be clean, dry and free from oil, dust or loose residues of old material.

In a deep joint, a polyethylene filling cord is inserted first, with a diameter slightly larger than the opening. It serves two purposes: it controls the depth, ensuring that the sealant is approximately half the thickness of the joint’s width, and it prevents it from sticking to the base. This is more important than it sounds. A sealant that adheres to all three sides cannot stretch and will tear at the first sign of movement. Adhering only to the two opposite sides, it works as it should.

Temperature and season in Cyprus

There are two factors that affect the result, and people rarely think about them. The first is the surface temperature, not the air temperature. An aluminium frame in the July sun gets scorching hot, and the sealant forms a skin before you’ve had a chance to smooth it out. Work early in the morning or in the shade, and let the surface cool down before you start.

The second point is that the joint does not always have the same width. Materials contract in the cold and expand in the heat, so an external joint is at its widest in winter and at its narrowest in summer. If you seal it in August when the joint is at its narrowest, the material will stretch much more in January. That is why, for outdoor work, you should choose a material with some flexibility.

The most common mistakes

Paint applied to silicone, which never takes. Acrylic paint in a shower cubicle, which will discolour and flake off. Silicone acetate on marble or a mirror, leaving permanent marks. Filling a deep joint without a cord, which wastes material and causes it to crack. Application to a dusty or damp surface, which prevents the material from setting.

How long does it last, and when do you change it?

No joint lasts forever. In bathrooms and kitchens, where there is constant damp and cleaning products, silicone joints need to be renewed every few years. For external grout lines, their lifespan depends mainly on exposure to the sun and how much wear and tear the grout is subjected to.

The signs are clear. The material comes away from one side, cracks down the middle, hardens and loses its elasticity, or turns black due to mould in damp areas. As soon as any of these signs appear, the joint is no longer watertight, even if it looks intact.

The repair requires the old material to be completely removed with a chisel and the surface to be cleaned. A new layer applied over the old one will not adhere properly and will peel off along with it.

At Geosantro, you’ll find acid-curing and neutral-curing silicones, acrylic sealants in 280ml and 600ml sizes, grout adhesives and joint-filling cord in 10, 15 and 20 millimetres, available in our shops in Limassol and Nicosia or online. Tell us what type of joint you’re working on and we’ll recommend the right product for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I paint over silicone?;

No, and there’s no trick to fix it. Paint doesn’t adhere to silicone, so it will either form droplets or flake off within a few weeks. If the joint needs to be painted, remove the silicone completely, clean the surface thoroughly and reapply an acrylic sealant or a sealant that can be painted over.

Why does silicone smell of vinegar when it dries?;

Because it is acetic. As it hardens, it releases acetic acid, which gives off that characteristic odour and disappears as soon as the material sets. The odour is not a fault in the product, but it is a clear indication that you should not use it on marble, natural stone, mirrors or sensitive metals.

How long does an opened cartridge last?;

Much less than a full tube, as the material starts to harden from the tip inwards. Close the opening with the cap or a screw and store it upright in a cool place. The next time you use it, cut off the hardened bit at the tip before you start, rather than trying to push it through with the gun, as this will cause the cartridge to burst.

Do I absolutely need a silicone gun?;

For the 280ml and 600ml cartridges, yes. The gun provides a consistent flow and a controlled amount, which is exactly what you need for a clean joint. A good gun with a pressure-relief mechanism stops the flow as soon as you release the trigger, so the material doesn’t keep running out and you save yourself a lot of cleaning up at the end.

[3

post-123613","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog

Σιλικόνη, Πολυουρεθάνη ή Ακρυλικό: Ποιο Σφραγιστικό Για Κάθε Εργασία

<meta name="description" content="Σιλικόνη, πολυουρεθάνη ή ακρυλικό;
