A riveter is an essential tool for creating permanent connections between two materials (usually metal sheets) using rivets. It is the ideal solution when you need to join surfaces where access is only possible from one side (which is why these are often called "blind rivets"). Riveting provides a much more stable connection than a simple screw when working with thin metals.
A rivet provides a connection that does not loosen from vibrations, unlike screws. It is also a "cold" joining method, meaning it requires no heat (unlike welding). Therefore, it does not deform the material or damage the paint and the galvanic protection of the sheet metal.
The choice depends on two factors: frequency of use and rivet size. If you only set a few rivets a day, a high-quality one-handed riveter is sufficient. However, if you are a professional working on aluminum structures or ductwork, you will need a heavy-duty tool with ergonomic handles and a mandrel collector to work comfortably and keep your workspace clean.
Most professional riveters come with interchangeable nosepieces for different diameters (usually 2.4mm to 4.8mm). However, be careful: if you are using stainless steel rivets (Inox), make sure your riveter is reinforced. Inox is very hard and can quickly wear out a basic, DIY-grade riveter.
Yes, but it is simple. The most important step is to periodically clean the jaws inside the head. Over time, metal shavings can accumulate, causing the tool to "slip" and fail to pull the rivet properly. A light oiling of the mechanism will keep the movement smooth for years.
