Levels

Aluminium spirit levels for checking that surfaces are level and plumb on walls, floors, doors and cupboards. At Geosantro, you’ll find 61- and 80-centimetre models with two handles, which can be held steady with one or both hands without obscuring the sight glasses. The aluminium body does not bend when pressed against a surface, ensuring a reliable measurement. Check the accuracy by rotating the spirit level 180 degrees at the same point. This section also includes electronic spirit levels with a protractor, as well as laser spirit levels for longer distances. Free delivery throughout Cyprus on orders over 50 euros.

Look at the bubble in the liquid: when it sits exactly between the two lines, the surface is level. The horizontal vial indicates the horizontal level, whilst the vertical vial indicates the vertical level. If the bubble drifts to the right, it means that the right-hand side is higher and needs to be lowered.

The longer the spirit level, the more reliable the measurement over a large area, as it averages out minor irregularities. A length of 60 to 80 centimetres is the most convenient general choice for doors, cupboards and small structures. For walls and floors, you’ll need something longer, whilst for narrow spaces, a shorter one is best.

Aluminium combines light weight with rigidity, meaning the body does not bend when pressed against a surface. This is crucial, because a body that warps even slightly will give an incorrect reading. It also does not rust and can withstand the knocks of a building site without becoming cumbersome.

The handles give you a secure grip with one or both hands, especially when working at height or on a vertical surface. You can hold the spirit level without covering the vials and move it without scratching it. In everyday use, they make a noticeable difference in terms of fatigue and speed.

Place it on a flat surface and note where the bubble is. Then turn it 180 degrees, to exactly the same spot. If the bubble points in the same direction, the spirit level is in good working order. If it points elsewhere, the instrument has lost its calibration and you should not rely on it.

You simply place the spirit level on the surface and can see straight away if it’s level – no batteries and no setting up required. The laser projects a line across the entire space and is useful for long distances and positioning. In practice, one does not replace the other: the spirit level remains in every tradesperson’s toolbox.

The aluminium body is quite sturdy, but a hard fall can knock the sight out of alignment or cause the rail to bend slightly. The problem is that you can’t tell by looking at it. That’s why, after every hard fall, you should carry out the 180-degree check before continuing your work.

Lay it flat in a place where it won’t fall over; ideally, hang it by its hole or place it in a case. Don’t leave it standing upright against a wall, and don’t drop other tools on top of it. Clean off any plaster or cement whilst it’s still wet, as otherwise you’ll scratch the surface when scraping it off.

It refers to how much the reading may deviate for every metre of length. An accuracy of half a millimetre per metre means that over two metres, the deviation amounts to one millimetre. For building and installation work, this is perfectly fine, but for precision work, look for a tool with a smaller deviation.
